Prepare to be devastated by The Father.
Watch: Olivia Colman on working with Anthony Hopkins
Olivia Colman is back on our screens delighting us all as a singing nun in Paddington in Peru, but she was reducing us to tears back in 2021.
Adapted from the play of the same name, The Father sees Colman play Anne who, before she moves to Paris, tries to find some help for her father (Anthony Hopkins) who is living with dementia and refuses any carer she offers.
Even Colman called it a “hard and upsetting” watch, but it also ranks as her best movie to date with a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (We do have a soft spot for her voice role as an evil AI in The Mitchells vs the Machines though.)
If you haven’t seen the movie or are braving a rewatch, The Father airs tonight (December 7) at 00.55am on Channel 4, or in the early hours of Sunday morning if you prefer.
We get if that’s too late for a devastating movie watch, but luckily, The Father should be available to watch for free on Channel 4’s streaming service shortly after its broadcast tonight.
If you can’t wait that long, you can also buy or rent The Father right now from Prime Video and other digital retailers.
Anthony Hopkins surprisingly won the Best Actor Oscar over the heavily-favoured Chadwick Boseman in 2021.
Talking to Digital Spy for The Father‘s cinema release back in 2021, Colman praised her co-star for making her job “easy”.

“When the camera’s mainly on Tony, I’m standing next to the camera going, ‘Wow’. It was amazing,” she recalled.
“Lots of people ask what’s it like to meet him, and I was really nervous and terribly excited, but you know within five minutes, he’s just a really, really lovely, generous man,” she reflects. So all of that can go and you can really enjoy scenes together.”
