Coronation Street star Luca Toolan has been praised by his famous dad following his departure from the show.

Luca’s character Mason Radcliffe was killed off in Monday’s episode of the ITV soap, after being stabbed during an altercation with his brothers Matty and Logan following his decision to help the police gather evidence against them.

Although Mason received emergency treatment and was rushed to hospital, he later passed away from his injury.

Following the young actor’s final scenes as Mason, his radio star dad Mike Toolan – who hosts the Hits Radio drivetime show with Gemma Atkinson – took to social media to share his pride.

“What a journey. Unbelievably proud. Well done, mate,” he captioned a series of photos of Luca in character.

“@coronationstreet What a show, what an experience and what amazing friends you’ve made along the way. Here’s to the next chapter.”

“Sorry for killing your son, Mike,” Logan actor Harry Lowbridge commented on the post, while Charlie Wrenshall, who plays Liam Connor, added: “Gunna miss my brother at work.”

Following his exit as Mason, Luca revealed that he felt a “mixture of emotions” when he first learned about his character’s dark storyline.

“Of course when I first heard, there was a mixture of emotions because I was sad that Mason was going to die and that means I would be leaving – but equally I was really excited and honoured to be part of this storyline because it’s an incredibly important issue that needs to be tackled,” he shared.

“I feel so privileged to have had this opportunity to start my professional career at Coronation Street and what a great time I’ve had.”
