Watch: Robbie Williams previews new movie Better Man
We don’t yet know what Robbie Williams fans will make of his new biopic movie Better Man, but he’s clearly a big fan of it.
The new movie sees Williams portrayed by a CGI chimpanzee (played by Jonno Davies) and also features several of his hits, including ‘Rock DJ’, ‘She’s the One’ and ‘Come Undone’, reimagined for the movie.
Talking to Digital Spy, the star revealed that he ends up getting a bit too involved in the new versions of his own music.
“I listened to the new ‘Rock DJ’, separate to the film the other day, the final version was sent over, finalised, and yeah, it’s quite embarrassing when I’m watching the movie and there’s one person in the cinema going [mimes dancing along] and it’s me,” he joked.
“I’ve had that a few times in ‘Rock DJ’ where I’m just like, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to rock either’, and then I look round and nobody else is doing it. Yeah, I come out humming all the songs.”
We don’t blame him when it comes to ‘Rock DJ’ as it’s transformed in Better Man into a show-stopping musical number as Take That celebrate their breakthrough moment, turning into a massive dance on Regent Street in London.
They filmed on the actual street, closing it down for four nights with 500 extras, but the incredible sequence didn’t quite go to plan after a year-and-a-half of preparation and a final week of rehearsal.
“Right at the end of the week we got the phone call that the Queen had passed away and so there’s 10 days of mourning after the death of the Queen, so we were not shooting,” Gracey told
“We lost the money and it took us another five months to raise that money again and get back onto Regent Street to do it all over again.
“Over that period of time, we had a lot of people saying, ‘Look, you don’t really need that number. I’m sure you can cut that number, it wouldn’t affect the film,’ and I was just like, ‘No’.
“And so every time I watch that, I just smile because I think no one has any idea at how close we came to that number not being in the film.”
Ahead of Better Man‘s release over Christmas, Williams also spoke to Digital Spy about how the new movie is “therapy” for him, while lead star Jonno Davies explained why playing a chimpanzee was “liberating”.
